Thoughts on Nea D Campbell

Questions exist about Nea’s personality and his potential hate for humanity. In fact, D.Gray Man Wiki itself claims that Nea hates humans and prefers to act on his own. But even if Nea may hate humans, this does not – regardless of what individuals in the Order may claim – mean that he hates humanity as such and wants to see it destroyed.

In fact, Nea has – few times he had been fully conscious – actually shown kindness or at least care for humans, even those who were technically his enemies. The most obvious example is perhaps when he tried to save the Finders who had been sent to capture him.

As can be seen, he tried to warn the Finders multiple times, and was visibly affected when the Earl killed and consumed them. It also has to be understood that at that point, Finders were beyond saving, so there was no need for Nea to put up an act. Thus, it is likely that these were his real emotions.

Him claiming to hate humans may well be an attempt to push people away – to save himself from going through all the pain and loss he had to go through the first time around. In fact, when pushed, he claimed that only he can choose his friends and family – which again implies that he may actually have an interest in doing so. Further, Neah had multiple times stated that Past!Allen was his friend – so even if Neah did hate humans, this was clearly not a hard rule. Neah was also shown to care about Timcanpy, rather than considering it a tool.

So rather than hating humans, it is more likely that Nea was trying to push Link away – essentially, to protect him. Last time Nea had taken a group together to defeat the Earl, all of them died, except for Past!Allen. And while Nea had threatened Link multiple times, he never tried harming him. The worst thing Nea ever did to a human was knocking Johnny out – but this was likely to protect his secrets, and he made no further attempts at harming Johnny. In fact, Nea has only ever shown hatred towards the Noahs.

Next question is the song.

Apocryphos has claimed that once Allen falls asleep while Nea was trying to possess him, “it will be the end”. This seems to be supported by the song.

And then the boy falls asleep. The flame inside the breathing ashes. One, then two. The boy that falls asleep is likely Allen. The flame inside the breathing ashes, one, then two, can be two things. First possibility is how the original Millenium Earl split into two: “one” – the Earl, “then two” – Mana and Nea. Second possibility is Nea “hitching the ride” in Allen’s body: one body which gained two souls.

The floating swelling, the dear profile. The dear profile is a reference to D. – Hoshino had said that “D” means “dear” (Mana D. Campbell, Nea D. Campbell). So “the dear profile” may be Mana and/or Nea.

Thousands of dreams, dreams that pour onto the earth. This may be a reference to how Nea is using dreams to erase Allen and take over.

On the night when the silver eyes swing, The shining you, who was born.

Even though countless prayers are returned to the earth by the passing millions of years.

I continue praying, Love for the last, Kiss for the joined hands.

When Nea and Allen meet properly for the first time, in Allen’s mind, Nea does not appear to hold him any ill will. In fact, Nea talks to Allen normally, with no hint of insanity that he displayed when talking to literally anybody else, especially the Earl. Nea’s comment of Allen having become a “mad puppet” seems quite layered.

Yet Neah himself is quite a troll. This is especially seen in his first awakening. It is quite clear that, when in Allen’s body, Neah only remembers things he had seen when he was in control: hence his need for Timcanpy to provide a summary, and surprise when told that Timcanpy had been destroyed. He was also surprised when he sees Allen’s face in the mirror, which he should not have been had he remembered stalking Allen as a shadow or having a conversation with Allen in latter’s mindscape.

And despite that, he pulled this…

Also apparent here is that, apparently, “idiot beansprout” is one of Allen’s names. Allen needs somebody to call his name in order to snap out of Neah’s control, yet the nickname was close enough to achieve this same purpose.
